National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 410 is an industry standard created by the Aerospace Industries Association. It sets the basic requirements for training and certifying people who perform NDT. The standard requires formal classes, hands-on experience, written and practical exams, and vision tests.
NAS 410 was first published in May 1996 by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). It officially replaced the military standard MIL-STD-410 in late 1997.
It was created to transition NDT personnel qualification from a government-controlled military specification to a standardized, industry-owned requirement tailored specifically for the aerospace sector. As the Department of Defense phased out numerous military standards in the 1990s, the aerospace industry assumed responsibility for the document to maintain rigorous, consistent minimum requirements for training, experience, examinations, and certification of nondestructive testing personnel in manufacturing, service, maintenance, and overhaul activities.
This ensured continued high levels of competence and safety in safety-critical aerospace applications.
NAS 410 is the preferred standard in aerospace and defense because it sets strict, mandatory minimum requirements for NDT technician training, experience, and testing. It delivers higher consistency than the flexible guidelines of SNT-TC-1A or portable certifications such as ISO 9712, CAN/CGSB 48.9712, and ASNT 9712, and is required by most major contracts. This ensures reliable inspections and greater safety in critical applications.
Three Leaf NDT manages NAS 410 certification programs end-to-end, from initial setup to ongoing maintenance.
This includes complete administrative oversight with:
Benefits include reduced administrative burden, faster certification timelines, enhanced technician proficiency, and assured compliance with stringent aerospace and defense contractual obligations.
